Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge, South Africa: African eco retreat's multi-million dollar redesign

Billed as Africa's most environmentally sensitive lodge and ahead of its time when it opened two decades ago, Sabi Sabi's Earth Lodge melds into the bushveld. Sculpted into a sloping savannah with a roof designed to mimic termite mounds, the luxury safari lodge takes its cue from South Africa's neighbouring Kruger National Park. On offer are 13 luxurious new-look suites, a gym overlooking a waterhole where elephants come to drink, South African inspired spa, upscale dining and private game drives.

A multi-million dollar redesign aimed at keeping Sabi Sabi at the forefront of lodge design was unveiled late 2019, however few had the chance to see it before the pandemic forced its closure. During the hiatus, all staff at Sabi Sabi's four lodges were retained (with many upskilling) while protection of its private reserve and habitats was made a priority.

Four vehicles continued to go out on safari daily to maintain relationships with wildlife and also act as added eyes and ears for Sabi Sabi's efficient anti-poaching unit. "This also gave us the opportunity to share with the world what was happening in the bush and what was waiting for them once they are able to travel again," Sabi Sabi marketing director Jacques Smit said.

Today guests checking into the new look Earth Lodge can expect an even greater connection to nature. New suites offer uninterrupted bush vistas through wide stacker doors, trees and stars are visible through skylights while new patios allow for animal viewing from oversized sofas, leather hanging sling chairs or submerged in full-length plunge pools.

Handblown glass chandeliers, ornamental hornbill heads, leather occasional chairs, a bespoke slate drinks cupboard, rich timbers and marble sunken baths are but a few highlights of the new suites by Dakota Designs. "The new suites pay homage to four decades of our world class reputation in safari lodges and conservation," Smit said.

A wrench to leave at dawn for the twice daily safari drives, the promise of spotting the big five while cocooned in blankets and warmed by hot water bottles makes leaving king beds draped with mosquito netting far easier. Afternoon game drives meanwhile include canapes and sundowners as blazing African sunsets light up the plains.

Stays cost from $2100 a night per person including open safari vehicle safaris led by qualified rangers and trackers, environmental awareness walking safaris, breakfast, lunch, "boma" dinner, a house selection of beverages and transfers to and from Sabi Sabi's Airstrip. See sabisabi.com
