Seven of the best hotels for a Sydney staycation this festive season

By Katherine Scott

What is it you most look forward to over the summer holiday period – is it the festive meals, the thrilling harbour fireworks displays or hours clocked at the beach? Whichever way you choose to spend it, why not elevate the season by pairing your favourite festive activities with a city staycation or mini-break? Here are some of the best ways to do it.

Christmas lunch: Capella Sydney

Following its launch in March after a seven-year, $335 million restoration of the historic Department of Education building, Capella’s first Christmas is shaping up to be as grand and sumptuous as the reimagined hotel itself. Executive chef Brett Savage has designed a decadent three-course feast in the hotel’s signature Brasserie 1930 restaurant. The $250-a-head Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas Day lunch is set to include king prawns with baby cos and fermented chilli, Black Tyde rib-eye with brown butter and thyme, and a blueberry and mango trifle, among other festive morsels.

Pier One, with its harbour perch right next to the iconic bridge, is hands-down where you want to be when the fireworks kick off. This year, the wharf-side hotel is offering lavish NYE private suite-party packages from $8048 for two nights. The price tag gets you an indulgent suite experience and front-row seats to the harbour pyrotechnics for you and five mates, along with curated snacks and a mini-bar stocked with a cocktail kit, champagne, craft beers and premium wine. You’d be hard-pressed finding a more memorable vantage point.

Get a room: New Year’s Eve private suite party packages from $8048 for two nights (with maximum of six NYE guests), or from $25,000 for two nights in a balcony suite (maximum 10 NYE guests). Includes overnight stay for two adults with daily buffet breakfast. See pieronesydneyharbour.com.au/nye

Hilton Sydney recently unveiled the fruits of a $25 million revamp which spanned all 587 of its guests rooms, and it’s never looked spiffier. Cap off a shopping expedition with a drink in the city’s oldest and grandest drinking den, the Marble Bar (which just celebrated its 130th birthday), or if you’re splurging on a suite, then a post-shop soak with a view is in order.
